Although Nakameguro is popular among fashionable Japanese, there are no so-called tourist attractions in the area, so there is no need to visit unless you have a purpose in mind.

However, as Japanese celebrities and entertainers like to show up in Nakameguro, there are many fashionable stores, restaurants, cafes, bars, beauty salons, and other places with a good atmosphere.

It is also an upscale residential area that ranks high every year in Japan’s “Best Places to Live” rankings.

There are many fashionable, cute ladies and well-dressed men walking the streets, so it will be fun just to watch them.

Also, Nakameguro has a high level of gourmet food.

Although it is a small area, there are six Michelin-starred restaurants (five of them are Japanese-style restaurants).

There is also the The Roastery, the flagship store of Starbucks, which has only six stores in the world.

If you are an “advanced traveler to Tokyo” (i.e., this is your third or more visit to Tokyo), this is the area I would recommend.

The Meguro River is famous for its cherry blossoms.

Nakameguro, once a farming area

This area was a farming area in ancient and medieval times.

From the 12th to 15th century, the area was ruled by the Meguro clan, which is said to have given the area the name “Meguro”.

In modern times, the area remained a farming village and a small industrial area, but with the opening of the Tokyu Toyoko Line in 1927 and the construction of Naka-Meguro Station, it rapidly developed into a residential and commercial area, which was accelerated by the opening of the Hibiya subway line in 1964.

In the 1990s, stores offering sophisticated fashion (apparel and sundries), interior goods, galleries, and cafes with a great atmosphere began to accumulate in the area, which, together with neighboring Daikanyama and Ebisu, has been redeveloped into one of Tokyo’s most fashionable areas.

Nakameguro is close to Shibuya, Daikanyama, and Ebisu, so it would be more efficient to visit them together.

In particular, Daikanyama and Ebisu are only about 700 meters and 1 km away, respectively, and can be reached on foot.

If you enjoy Nakameguro, enjoy strolling around town and eating!

Hanami in Nakameguro is breathtaking!

Cherry blossom viewing

Along the Meguro River, which runs north-south on the east side of Nakameguro Station, there are approximately 800 cherry trees lining a 4-km stretch during the cherry blossom season.

It is one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in Tokyo, so if you are in Tokyo around the end of March or early April, it is a good idea to visit.

You can also enjoy the fantastic cherry blossoms lit up at night.

However, be prepared for the streets and stores to be extremely crowded during the season.
